Novated lease tax benefits on a Smart™ lease are a combination of savings, including:
- GST savings on the car price
- Pre‑tax salary deductions (reducing taxable income)
- GST savings on running costs
- FBT and ECM balancing or exemptions
Fringe Benefit Tax (FBT) is a tax employers pay on certain benefits, including novated leases. In most cases the cost of FBT is offset through your lease using post‑tax contributions (ECM). Eligible electric cars are exempt from FBT, making them even more cost‑effective.
The process starts with getting a personalised novated lease quote for a BMW iX or other cars, including accessories, running costs and different lease terms. Once you’re happy with the package, it’s time to apply for finance.

Step 3. Apply for finance
You’ll then apply for finance online, with a typical turnaround of around 24 hours (subject to credit approval).
Step 4. Source car
After signing your contract, we’ll source your car at a great price through our 740‑strong dealer network, and set up your payroll deductions.
Step 5. Settlement
After delivery, Smart manages all payments and running‑cost budgets for you.
At the end of your term, you can choose to:
- Pay the residual value owed and own the car.
- Refinance the residual and keep leasing.
- Upgrade to a new car.

A residual payment, as determined by the Australian Taxation Office, is payable at the end of a novated lease. The specific residual amount will be detailed in your personalised vehicle quote. Your personal circumstances have not been factored into this estimate and your actual novated lease repayment residual amounts and tax savings will depend on your income tax bracket, your employer's GST processing method, the administration fees payable under your employer's salary packaging plan and your personal circumstances.
